You may want to have a look at the <a href="http://dev.webadmin.ufl.edu/~dwc/2008/09/29/new-versions-of-http-authentication/" rel="nofollow">http-authentication 2.2</a> plugin for WordPress 2.6 and compare the differences. If I have the chance to retry wpmu, I'll post any updated code here. @Matteo: I did not test it with wpmu 2.7 since I’m not using it anymore. You may want to have a look at the http-authentication 2.2 plugin for WordPress 2.6 and compare the differences.
