Office: There’s not enough memory or system resources to start

Symptoms

Error messages when selecting a .docx/.pptx/.xslx file in Windows Explorer preview pane:

  • There’s not enough memory or system resources to start PowerPoint
  • There’s not enough memory or system resources to start Word
  • Excel displays an error message with a red cross icon and no text

Solution

This happens when the 64-bit version of Microsoft Office 2013 or Microsoft Office 2016 is uninstalled and the 32-bit version is reinstalled. This leaves references in the registry for 64-bit Preview Handlers.

To fix these errors and repair the preview pane, run Regedit as administrator and delete these registry keys:

Microsoft Excel previewer:

Microsoft PowerPoint previewer:

Microsoft Word previewer:

Microsoft Visio previewer:

A logoff/logon or reboot is required.

  1. Thank you, this worked fine for my problem. A new Windows 10 computer, I installed on it Office 2013 and could not preview any of the Office documents. They all gave a different error messages. I was lucky to find this post. Thank you.
